What Each State is Best and Worst At: 3 Maps Show the Wonderful Variety of the United States

Whenever you get a chart like this saying a state is the “worst” at things, you can’t always take it at face value. It’s meant to be taken as an anecdotal thing, but it turns out there are a lot of statistics to back these up – available in full at

One example is North Dakota, which apparently has the “ugliest residents” (obviously, an over-generalization). The data to back this assessment come by way of The Daily Beast, which ranked states on such measures as Model/Magazine ranking, fitness ranking and pageant ranking.

It’s far from an exact science, but the great majority of the other states are based on harder data. Many of the stats are taken from the government-run U.S. Census Bureau or America’s Health Rankings.

So if you’re a beautiful person in North Dakota (and odds are that you are), don’t fret. This map’s not talking about you.

Balancing out the “worst” list are a few more charts coming by way of the Houston Press. The first one is another take on what each state is the “worst” and is a bit more straightforward, created by the Mother Nature Network

Just to go out on a high note, here is a map from the same agency that shows what states are the “best” at:

Texas, congratulations! You’ve got the most wind power in the country. On the other hand, you’ve got the most CO2 emissions. It turns out each state is a mixed bag, and you can’t generalize based on just one statistic. But it still is fun to explore what makes each state unique in the 50 states of the U.S.A.
